Stockport Christmas Light Switch on 2019

This is one thing that I didn’t include in my Christmas bucket list but I really should have done! Especially if you have kids as they will absolutely LOVE a light switch on. What more to get you into the Christmas spirit than Santa, snow, carollers and Christmas lights…

The other evening I took a trek down to my local town to see the spectacle. They’d promised arial performances and snow so I was eager to see what it was like.

The Light Switch On

As I was approaching the town centre I was a little disappointed because the lights had already been switched on. There were 3 performances scheduled for the evening; 4pm, 5:45pm and 7:30pm. I had chosen to attend the middle one as it would be dark by then and I would be home in time for Strictly. In hindsight I’m assuming the countdown was at 4 so maybe I would have been better going to the first performance…

The lights themselves didn’t disappoint though, the quality of them or the amount. I would have loved to have taken pictures of them all but I might save that for later πŸ˜‰ There was also a second tree because 1 clearly isn’t enough.. This one was just in front of Redrock but wasn’t lit up quite as much as the first.

The food choices

Had I not already got tea sorted I would have been spoilt for choice, from donuts to hot dogs, and mulled wine to fizzy drinks. All of the food stalls (and there were lots) had their own Christmas lights on and were rather busy. If that’s not a sign of tasty food then I don’t know what is…

I was super tempted to treat myself to some donuts but at 4 for Β£3 I just couldn’t justify it. I’m used to being able to get 8 donuts for Β£1 back in the old home town! Instead I made waffles and golden syrup and squirt cream when I got home… Just as good and in the warm!

The Entertainment

There’s a little sneak peak above as there was even snow as part of the entertainment! And don’t be cynical, of course it was real! Maybe real foam but I’m still claiming it snowed πŸ˜‰

Seen as the ‘light switch on’ didn’t actually happen while I was there I can’t comment on it but there wasn’t a shortage of entertainment on offer here. Singers and carollers kept up the Christmas spirit with festive tunes and the general atmosphere was really quite warming.

Instead of me talking to you about all the different entertainment I thought I’d just show you instead!

Everyone seemed to have a really good time and it was a really enjoyable evening and enough to put you into the Christmas spirit. Santa himself had to make an appearance as well of course…

Along with the Big Man himself I’ll leave you with a couple of videos of the live entertainment!

It’s not too late!

If you’ve not been to a light switch on event yet then it’s not too late! There are loads of events on around the country.

On the other hand I’d love to know if you have been and which ones you’d recommend attending!

  5. When I was a Girl Scout, I used to have to stand at a table with my troop and hand out hot chocolate in a parking lot during our Christmas tree light up night. It always felt like the coldest night of the year, but then we’d count down from 10, the tree would light up, and Santa would arrive on the local fire truck, and everyone would forget about being cold and run to meet him on stage to say hi and collect a plastic candy cane full of generic chocolate candies. It’s one of those memories I’m glad I have but also one I’m grateful that I don’t have to do anymore. Great post!
